BIOGRAPHY

A rare reality TV star with a career rooted in the real world, Bethenny Frankel was born in New York City in 1970. She became intimately involved in the show business community as a large-scale event planner, helping produce movie premieres and award shows, but a love of food and a need to promote a natural lifestyle led her to change gears. She attended Natural Gourmet Cooking Institute, and soon started a company called Bethennybakes, providing gourmet, holistic, all-natural foods for high-end clientele designed to promote weight loss while enhancing health and adhering to customized restrictions like dairy-free and wheat-free lifestyles. In 2005, Frankel brought her business to the small screen, joining the cast of The Apprentice: Martha Stewart. She made it to the series finale, and though she came in second place, her notoriety increased tremendously. Frankel began writing a column for Hamptons Magazine, authored books on healthy weight loss, and became a well-known advocate for weight loss through healthy and accessible lifestyle choices. In 2008, Frankel joined the cast of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York City, a reality show profiling the lives of high-powered, successful Manhattan women. It was an ironic title for Frankel, who was not married, but the show boosted her celebrity even more, and she took on a number of endorsement deals for companies like Pepperidge Farm and Diets.com.

From October 14, 2010:  Bernadette Birk is fed up with daughter Bethenny Frankel’s claims that she was “never a mother” to the reality star.

Bethenny, of “Real Housewives of New York” fame, has spoken openly about her allegedly troubled past on her Bravo reality show, “Bethenny Getting Married?” where she was filmed making regular visits to a therapist to discuss various issues (including her lack of a “true childhood”).  However, the reality star’s mom tells a different story.

”[Bethenny] did not come from a broken home and her father did not leave her at 4 years old,” Bernadette claimed to RadarOnline.com in an interview on Thursday. “I left her father when she was 2 years old and he did not support us with one penny, no alimony.

“I was a stay-at-home mother and didn’t go back to work until she started boarding school,” she added. “I gave up so much because I loved [Bethenny]… I didn’t even consider it giving something up.”

In a July 7 interview with People magazine, Bethenny told the mag that her early years were filled with “destruction,” including “alcohol abuse, eating disorders and violent fights” – a claim Bernadette denies.  “She is slamming me… and I’m sick!” Bernadette told the site.  “She went to visit her father for the first time at 15 years old,” Bernadette, an interior architect, said. “It was the same time she is now claiming she started drinking and doing drugs. I was never aware she was doing this. Even though she is bad mouthing her father she was always after his affection.”

Bernadette, who claims she has been estranged from her daugher for a decade, said their last bit of communication was less than pleasant.  “The last time I spoke to [Bethenny] was 10 years ago when she borrowed my car and then demolished it, and she left it in her boyfriend’s lot and it got stripped,” she claimed to the site. “I called her to tell her and she started yelling at me and hung up… and we have never spoken since.”
