FOR ALL SH READERS: Takin’ A SH Detour… Marvin Hamlisch … AND… A Detour Of A Detour… From Hamlisch To Hiatt!!!

August 7, 2012  10:00 am   Let’s take a break from these phony baloney Housewives… and listen to some of the music of Marvin Hamlisch…

                            Marvin Hamlisch…

The fabulously talented composer, Marvin Hamlisch died this morning in LA.  He was 68 years old… he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1986.

From Marvin Hamlisch.com:  As composer, Hamlisch has won virtually every major award that exists: three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globe awards.

For Broadway he has written the music for his groundbreaking show, A Chorus Line, which received the Pulitzer Prize as well as They’re Playing Our SongThe Goodbye Girl and Sweet Smell of Success.

He is the composer of more than forty motion picture scores including his Oscar-winning score and song for The Way We Were and his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s music for The Sting, for which he received a third Oscar. His prolific output of scores for films include original compositions and/or musical adaptations for Sophie’s Choice, Ordinary People, The Swimmer, Three Men and a Baby, Ice Castles, Take the Money and Run, Bananas, Save the Tiger, and his latest effort The Informant!, starring Matt Damon and directed by Steven Soderbergh.

Marvin Hamlisch holds the position of principal pops conductor for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony and Pops, Seattle Symphony and San Diego Symphony.

Hamlisch is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music and Queens College (where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree). He believes in the power of music to bring people together.

Music can make a difference. There is a global nature to music, which has the potential to bring all people together. Music is truly an international language, and I hope to contribute by widening communication as much as I can.

About Stoopid Housewives

The Real Housewives franchises have become a guilty pleasure for me and I've become intrigued by 'normal' people who would agree to put their lives on television for public display and scrutiny. What are their motives to divulge their daily routines for viewing audiences to approve, reprimand, berate, castigate, attack; basically abuse and judge? Oh, just forget about the above nonsense... the majority of these people are just stoo-pid.

  2. CJ says:

Another great talent that scored the music for a generation. Remember watching him on the Merv Griffin when I was young.

  3. KateH says:

A Brilliant and kind man, truly gone too soon. When asked to choose my favorite Marvin Hamlisch song, I say, Impossible! There are so many “favorites”.
In the early 90′s I was the spa consultant at a new resort/spa in Telluride, CO. The grand opening of the spa was a star studded gala featuring Marvin Hamslisch playing piano in the bar the night of the opening. I had the privalege of sitting at the front table with his lovely wife Terri for the performance. It was a night I will never forget. RIP, Marvin and deepest condolences to his wife of 25 years, Terri.

Miss the days of ole and all that made them memorable.

  5. difromnyc says:

I still laugh at his face in the movie ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ and marvel how he agreed to do that movie.

    RIP

  6. JellyBelly says:

This makes me so sad. I was very fortunate to have seen him with the Pasadena Symphony this spring at the Greek Theatre accompanying Idina Menzel. They bantered in between musical numbers, which was so sweet. It was a magical evening.

  7. JellyBelly says:

Oh yeah! He used to guest on this wacky show I watched as a child: The Great Space Coaster. Anyone remember that?

  8. HolyCow says:

Thanks for all the great videos, Ms. SH. I loved Marvin Hamlisch. I was fortunate enough to see A Chorus Line twice as a kid on Broadway during the initial run. What a great show. He will be missed.

    • KateH says:

Wow! The original NY run!! Lucky you! I saw the traveling show twice, it was great both times, but the original cast in NY would have truly been magic. I have been listening to the soundtack today……wonderful!
      Thank You, Marvin!

  9. What a beautiful tribute. Thank you MsSH

  11. Pompano Ann says:

What a talent; if you recall the movie “How to lose a guy in 10 days” he had a guest appearance and it was a great scene. RIP, again sad to loose talent like this!

  12. KateH says:

Something I did not know about Marvin, he entered Juliard at the age of 7! Wow, he was truly a prodigy! One thing for certain, his musical legacy will last for centuries to come.

    • KateH: Yes, he truly was a child prodigy! His lifetime of work is amazing! TFC!!! SH

      • lisa the Irish Dragon says:

He was infact the Youngest student ever admitted to Julliard a record he still holds
He was quite the talent and talent like his doesn’t come around to often make me sad that so many of the people from my Childhood entertainment are dying lately dying is a part of living but it still makes me sad.

        • lisa: What I loved most about Marvin Hamlisch was his sense of humor. Most brilliant people have a great sense of humor… his was rapier sharp! A pretty funny guy! TFC!!! SH

  13. KateH says:

Lisa you are so right, he had a wicked sense of humor!
Terre, his wife tells a hilarious story about Marvin on their honeymoon. As a gift to Terre, Marvin was able to get an audience with the Dali Lama. Terre was very excited as you can imagine, but, she was nervous just before they went in for the meeting, because, as Terre put it, she could tell that Marvin had something up his sleeve. So they walked in and first Terre was introduced and shook the Dali Lama’s hand, then it was Marvin’s turn, he said, Hi Dali, nice to meet you, and will we be meeting your back up band, The Lama’s! I guess both Marvin and the Dali Lama laughed for quite a while on this one!
