Is ‘Real Housewives’ Star a Deadbeat Dad?
Vicki Gunvalson is probably best known as the only original housewife still standing on Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Orange County.” Recently on the show, the divorced businesswoman has fallen for a 45-year-old businessman from Mississippi named Brooks Ayers. Ayers has been described as a deadbeat dad on the show, a label which he and Gunvalson often deny, but now a former girlfriend says she has the proof.
“He has not supported his child,” Nicolette Catanzarite told “20/20.” “He bailed on the hospital bill, the pediatrician bill, and left me with all of it.”
A 41-year-old model and hair salon owner from Indianapolis, Catanzarite is the mother of Ayers’ 3-year-old son. But she didn’t always have such choice words for Ayers. When she first met him, he swept her off her feet.
“I met Brooks in 2007 in Atlanta on a golf trip and he just kind of was a Southern charmer without a doubt,” Catanzarite said. “He just always said the right things at the right time.”
Catanzarite said Ayers treated her like a princess — opening doors, wining and dining her, and giving her a promise ring.
“He did mention that he was going through a divorce and that he was legally separated and that he had three children,” Catanzarite said. “It wasn’t appropriate that he would ask me to marry him while he was still married so he gave me a promise ring.”
Catanzarite said Ayers seemed so up front about his life that she never doubted anything he told her.
“I just believed everything that he said,” says Catanzarite.
Ayers told Catanzarite, who was a divorced mother of four, that he wanted a fresh start…and this time without children. She says he explained to her that he had had a vasectomy.
“It made him sad that he could never, if we were ever to get married, be able to have a baby together,” she said. “I bought it hook, line and sinker.”
When Catanzarite found out she was pregnant a few months in to the relationship she was surprised, but assumed his vasectomy didn’t take and this was a sign.
“I was like, this is gonna be the best kid in the world,” Catanzarite said, thinking that she would be with Ayers for the rest of her life. “I just couldn’t wait to have him and really always thought that this was such a blessing.”
Looking back Catanzarite says the vasectomy was the first of his many lies. Shortly after their son was born she says she noticed Ayers’ behavior was becoming erratic and things quickly went downhill.
“Within two or three weeks I started seeing kind of a different behavior from him,” Catanzarite said. “He was obsessive, angry, moody and controlling with me. It was very strange.”
Catanzarite said he even lied to people about having nose cancer. As Ayers’ lies began to mount, Catanzarite found herself in a quandary.
“Our electric bill was getting shut off, my phone was getting shut off and I didn’t know he hadn’t been paying the rent on the house,” she said. “He would always make up excuses and say the judge has held the escrow account and they’ve locked all their funds until the divorce was final.”
Soon after their son’s birth Catanzarite says Ayers disappeared and he has not been a part of his life at all.
“No birthdays, no cards for Christmas, no phone calls, nothing,” Catanzarite said. “It’s very frustrating.”
In 2010, Catanzarite sued Ayers for child support and they later entered an agreement that Ayers would pay Catanzarite $700 per month and child support arrears of more than $2,500. She says she has received little of that. Catanzarite had been trying to track him down but says she but could only find a post office box number for him. One night a friend insisted she turn on the TV and that’s when she discovered her son’s dad was appearing on “The Real Housewives of Orange County.” Ayers was actually hiding in plain sight for millions to see.
While Ayers reportedly owes thousands of dollars to Catanzarite, he is living large on television flashing new veneers and buying a mink coat for girlfriend, Gunvalson.
Brooks Ayers is no heir to any fortune. He has been arrested for DUI and later pleaded guilty to reckless driving. He has also been arrested for failure to pay child support. Gunvalson gets a lot of flak from family and friends on the show who can’t believe she is dating and defending a man with questionable character.
Recently in an interview on an online TV show, “Ask Dan and Mike,” he brags about how he is an involved father.
“I speak to my kids every day,” Ayers told the host. “I have three kids by my previous marriage and one extra child as well.”
Catanzarite was heartbroken and angry when she heard Ayers refer to their son as an “extra” … on SH May 6, 2012…and it was because of this interview that she decided to speak out for the first time to “20/20.”
In the online interview, Ayers speaks publicly about his support for his children.
“I’ve been in jail as a result of getting behind on child support and I have learned from that. I am happy to tell you that we got everything current. I never walked away from my kids.”
Catanzarite says that’s not entirely true. She says she has yet to see a dime from him and has a warning about the man she thought she knew.
“He’s a manipulator, he’s a liar, he’s a con, he’ll do or say anything to anybody, anytime, anywhere, to get what he wants,” said Catanzarite.
Although she continues to pursue the thousands of dollars she claims Ayers owes her in child support, Catanzarite is not bitter. She says she has found happiness in a new relationship and is raising her son in a loving environment.
So glad Crooks is going to get more coverage tonight. Thanks for your part Ms.SH. What he has done to the mother’s of his children, the nanny and others is horrible.

that gets a little sticky I would have to hire a lawyer in CA to draw up the paperwork to submit it court a body attachment for his arrest here in Indiana-and i simply have no money to hire one..I have to dig more to find out..

You’re not peanuts. It’s the principle. We called her to get involved in a case where a college student was raped and the school basically kicked the victim out so they wouldn’t have to deal with the publicity nightmare that it would have caused. The family didn’t have the funds and she did everything pro bono. Call her, she is based in California. Maybe she will represent both of you. I’m telling you that she will be on Nightline within a week.

Gloria Allred isn’t going to take the case, he has no money. There should be a felony warrant out of the State of Indiana in the court were a contempt of court was adjudicated by the above mentioned party. You get the Sheriff in CA to serve the warrant.

It is absolutely disgusting that Cohen knew about Crooks and did nothing about it. Could it be that he couldn’t do anthing about it because filming was already finished up? The only thing that could redeem his ignoring the issue is if he comes clean during the reunion show, but I wouldn’t count on it…

My guess is that he “dumped” this girlfriend and the new baby when he met up with Dazzling Vicki.
It has been reported that she was seeing him during her marriage to Donn which more or less undescored her “constant traveling” and her late night office hours which were remarked upon by both Michael and Briana as Vicki gushed over their having a rare “family dinner” on one of the episodes.
We all know that Briana is no slouch and has her mother’s number so her not liking Brooks is based as much on her mother “fooling around” with him prior to the divorce more so than that he is just a slimy creep who sends “affirmation cards” to “his lady”.
Vicki is an idiot and a desperate one at that to be able to overlook the baggage this guy is dragging with him when she is so eager to judge everybody else.
Brooks is nothing but a Lounge Lizard and she is falling for the cheapest come on lines in the book that a naive 16 yr old would be able to see through and she is going on 50!

Sadly, even if they can serve Crooks, he doesn’t have any money. He’s living off of Vicki. California sure isn’t going to throw in behind bars. They don’t have room for dangerous criminals, let alone out of state dead beat dads. I doubt either Indiana or Mississippi is going to pay to have him shipped back to their states. Your dead on Pat Johnson, dead on. I think she was messing with him long before the divorce and Brianna knows, truly knows. In fact I will swear on a stack of bibles that I saw this buy last season when Tamara and Vicki went to that Mexican beach resort and he was in the pool. I think that Vicki has been supporting him since 2009 when she started to have issues with Don and her “love tank”. And remember what was shot in 2009 was showed in 2010 season, so if you follow that we are looking into the past events she has been messing around with him for 2 years. Around the time of issues with Don. Here’s something else to wonder also remember last season or was it season before last when Vicki took her office and Brianna to Seattle for the insurance thing she does once and sometimes twice a year. Remember that youngish brunette guy that Vicki was all over and Brianna was just going nuts yelling HE get off my mom and such and Vicki told her that he was a good friend. I think around this time she figured out or saw something that told her her mother was having an affair. She doesn’t want to out her mother in the public and hurt her, what does she do. She keeps her mouth shut and possibly and possibly tell her when the cameras aren’t around that you where having an affair. If I know Vicki she would have denied it even if Brianna would have had pictures.
Also in regard to Nicolette Catanzarite who has 4 kids, I’m glad she came out on 20/20 and outed this fool. Vicki is going to have a hard time obfuscating this, I don’t like Slade but this guy may have outdone him by a mile. What has me confused is at first I thought she was doing really hot business wise and such being in the hair business for 25 years in Carmel Indiana (I know the place, it’s known for the wealthy) and owning a place for just as long. Why where they living in a rented house and having trouble with light bill, rent and other things. Surely she would have been comfortable before this Brooks guy. Don’t throw any bottles at me but I think she was breaking even and then some in her line of work and on the side she may have UTR (Under The Radar) escorted and went to Golf tournaments and conventions to make some side money and she met Brooks. Because it doesn’t make sense that some person who had a business both modeling and doing hair for so long would go on a Golfing trip when they are just barely making it. I think she got swept off her feet and he promised her the world talking big money and divorce and such and she thought she hooked a whale.
Being a hairstylists doesn’t make you an automatic escort or anything like that in the adult industry, it’s just the little things that I picked up being around this life from others and including dabbling in it myself.
I think you are correct about everything you said and no one should take offense. Brooks was indeed on one of those trips – in the background – and I remember Briana being upset when that guy was trying to “maul” her mother. I would swear on that stack of bibles with you. It’s an effed up thing to realize one (or both) of your parents are cheating.
Interesting perspective that I never would have considered prior to your comment. I had actually interpreted (or perhaps assumed) that they were living in his house; and, since things would have been in his name, it would have made sense that those services would have been shut off due to lack of payment by the responsible (on paper) party.

My honest opinion is Vicki G. is a disgusting specimen of the human race. Yes, she has two beautiful children, a successful business and a plethora of beautiful things. However, the waterworks & screams come spewing out of her when the tables are turned. She has every excuse for her behavior & Brooks lack of being a responsible parent.

We know that the housewives read SH and it has been on there for a while now about Nicolette and her son not to mention the Nanny. I think that Vicki was fully aware of the situation and I believe the Nanny spoke to Vicki directly. Her response to the Nanny was that she was stupid for letting herself get so in debt because of Brooks. I’m sure Vicki is no more embarrassed then these two women were having to go public to make a wrong right.

Wow! thanks SH for thje heads up about the 20/20 episode.I do not watch bravo anymore I only come here… Rarely if ever do we get the satisfaction of witnessing a -you get what you deserve moment- but I have disliked maybe even hated Vicki for all her self-righteous pompous outbursts since I first laid eyes on her, she is a true evil hater and now she just looks like the idiot she has always despised ( Gretchen for loving Slade, Alexis for loving Jim) she finally got hers and I feel absolutely no sympathy for the raving lunatic she is!!! hahahah.. Now if only I could get the same satisfaction to an end with Taylor Armstrong, for she is the one I truly feel has violated any sense of common decency due a fellow human being, she is a piece of shiyt that should be behind bars!!

Either Vicki is a cheapo or she’s a dummy. Neither Nanny, nor Nickie are not owed that much in the world of Vicki G. So why not pay these two what they are legally entitled to receive? I mean I know that Nicks has bigger issues, but frankly, I would not want that creep around my little boy, so I would abandon any attempts to get him to act like a father, he donated sperm, end of story. If Vicki was looking to keep him, why not cover up some of his major malfunctions?

What is the amount that Brooks owes in child support? Is it as much as Slade? I don’t understand how Brooks rated 20/20 and not Slade. It would’ve made more sense if 20/20 had just done a story on both Brooks and Slade.

Well, the episode was primarily about cheaters, not deadbeat dads. Brooks just happens to be both.
Slade hasn’t gone to jail for not paying child support, and he swears he’s not as behind as his baby momma says he is. I am most definitely NOT a Slade fan but I suspect there are more than a few things we don’t know about that situation. (Although IMO any man that doesn’t work so that he doesn’t have to pay as much as he once did is a big ass munch)

pinocchio’s nose is going to fly off his face trying to lie his way out of this one. Usually don’t like to see anyone really get taken but will make an exception in Vicky’s case. Everybody has tried to tell her this guy is pond scum and she is the know-it-all. She deserves to get taken for every penny, no wonder Donn is suing for spousal support (which she is fighting) he’s trying to save some of the money before pinocchio goes through it all. I used to like Vicky buy she has been such a complete moron lately over Brianna and this snake I would really like to see her hit rock bottom.

I have NO sympathy for Vicki. She knows and has known for a very long time yet CHOOSES to be with Brooks. Vicki is the same as far as I can see.
The fact that she flaunted that fur coat (which had to have cost thousands, unless Brooks scammed it off of some other woman), knowing that he owes back child support for his kids, is disgusting. As a mom, she should be ashamed. And even more so that she would throw over her own daughter for this guy. Granted, Briana isn’t handling the situation well (she’s acting like an over-emotional teen instead of an adult) but she’s right on the money about Brooks. I wonder how many pairs of pants or visits to the pediatrician that fur coat would pay for? But all Vicki cares about is that she has something to shove under her friends’ noses to “prove” that Brooks is a nice guy. Gag. And the stuff Brooks says is so completely phony. I keep expecting him to look down at his hands at the notes he wrote there, for himself. But no, he’s been at this a while, he has his routine down pat.
