JOE NAVARRO…
Joe Navarro is recognized as one of the world’s foremost authorities on reading non-verbal communications and he is regularly interviewed on programs such as NBC’s Today Show, Fox News, ABC’s Good Morning America, CBS’ Early Show, and for publications such as The Washington Post and Psychology Today.
From Joe Navarro… The non-verbal expert:
It’s estimated that as much as 80% of our interaction with others is through non-verbal communication, or body language. And the vast majority of the nonverbal cues we display are driven by our subconscious mind – they are important indications of how we are feeling and what we’re thinking.
Joe Navarro has been studying non-verbal behavior for the past 30 years. Twenty-five of these were spent in the FBI catching spies.
Today Joe is an internationally recognized expert, author, and gifted lecturer, in the interpretation of non-verbal behavior.
Joe has been writing articles and books for the past 10 years. He also writes regular monthly columns for a variety of publications. His books include Advanced Interviewing Techniques, co-authored with John Schafer and currently used by the FBI’s counterterrorism division, Hunting Terrorists: A Look at the Psychopathology of Terror,Read ‘Em and Reap written with Marvin Karlins, and most recently What Every Body is Saying…
After a very interesting exchange via twitter re the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Shana “Taylor Armstrong”, SH wrote to Mr. Navarro asking his permission to publish his insights… Mr. Navarro gave his permission… here is what he had to say…

Mr. Navarro gave his further expert opinion in his tweets re Shana…
Friends are the worst people to ask … John Wayne Gaceys friends thought he was greatIn fact the narcissist reacts with rage, callousness, even viciousness when criticized. Ahh don’t you just love them
He was always the odd man even among the other men – his narcissism was palpable as was his paranoia
she was symbiotically dependent on him (extravagance life style) so she had to play the role
Remember its never about deception, it is always about discomfort and issues and they were clearly there
She is doing a performance and as such junk in junk out. You can tell (eye blocking) she didn’t like talking about it.
For shoes, jewelry, & purses people often put up with a lot
“…in any case always caution because its a performance & she has Histrionic features
She has many of the hallmarks – oversexualization, need to be noticed, theatrical, concern for appearance, drama blah blah blah”
She should have sought help rather than to protect him

Please visit Mr. Navarro’s twitter to see the rest of his insight into Shana… here.

Wow, very interesting.
What we’ve all seen each time she’s in the camera’s frame. Narcissist. Histrionic personality. He left one important feature out, though: pathological liar.
how much did he observe her? it doesn’t seem much.
I think one problem here is that there really is very little that has been seen of Russell. The show that featured Taylor’s birthday party last year shows more of him as his true self. That and the clip Russel being interviewed on Taylor’s birthday this year. With the shows story line being so heavily edited I think the later clip would be better to judge.
I would think that quite a bit of Shana’s body language towards Russell would also be because she knew that she was painting him as an abuser to her friends and constantly confiding in them about “her unhappy marriage” , it would only seem natural that when she would be in his presence and the subject came up concerning , for instance, what Camille had said, he said it was an outright lie, yet she knew that she had told the women that. I don’t think her body language was that of ‘ I am afraid because it is true” but more of ” I am afraid that he will find out I really did say that to the other women”. thru out both seasons she threw him to the wolves wanting to keep them from befriending Russell so that she could continue her lies about him. On some conscience level her body language has to be showing her guilt of her deceit to him, even if on a subconscious level.
I think the Tell in that scene was that instead of repeating what was said by Camille she said and Russel knows what we are talking about. That’s when Kyle says does he?
That’s just one of the incidents tho, there were others of them discussing Camille in the limo, I am just using that as one of the examples of the way she acts around him. When they left and were talking about Vegas and you could tell she was the angry one because she got thrown out of the party, when she said at the end of the day, you probably shouldn’t of sent the email and he went on to say it was an out and out lie, etc. her body language didn’t seem of fear, only that she knew she had told them that and a lot of other things as well. What would anyone’s spouse feel if they had found out their wife was going around saying things like that about them? I am not saying she was afraid of him knowing she said it because he would beat her for it, tho I am quite sure when he found out it wasn’t pretty , just as anyone else who found out their spouse was saying such awful things to other people. It was more of a Oh Crap, how am I going to get out of this one.
When she said Russell know’s what we are talking about , it was no doubt to shut them up. Only she didn’t expect Adrienne to say, no Camille did not exaggerate. It had always worked for her before and this time it didn’t .
I’m buying that book. He better be thanking _you_ for exposure, SH. (IBS… Slightly)
That was interesting!
we all buy that book and we will all be really be able to diagnose Shana, tho I think SH and the posters have done a fine job with diagnosing her as it is.
Me too!!!!!! I’ve been looking for something exactly like that!! Thanks!!!!
Don’t waste your money on this book! I read it and what a waste of time. Most of it is common sense. I actually purchased this book when I opened my business and was in the process of interviewing people to hire. Sorry if I insulted anyone but I wouldn’t want anyone to spend their money and time and not learn anything from it.
Well, I have to respectfully disagree. I already ordered it from WalMart and I read a few excerpts on Amazon. In just a few pages, I’ve already figured out someone in my personal life who has been a total enigma, until now. I’m really impressed with it so far. I think it might be more useful to use the information on people you know and see frequently, rather than strangers. As in recognizing patterns, etc.
P.S. Another really good book is “Reading People: How to Understand People and Predict Behavior”, written by Joellen Dimitrius, jury consultant (she consulted on the jury for the OJ trial).
Debra: And, don’t forget JoEllen worked on the jury for William Smith… where Miami Housewife Lea Black met her husband, Roy. TFC!! SH
That is what I plan to use it for. I contain only a modicum of common sense, so I hold out hope that what I do not posses (some) may be found in these pages.
I live life in seek of knowledge and insight and know that if I ever feel that I have enough of that, I should reevaluate my perspective.
MyT, another thing we have in common. I think the best feeling in the world is what happens when youre getting smarter. I love learning (hence my many graduate degrees and the variety of fields/subjects ive studied/worked in). I also love learning languages, immersing myself in other countries’ cultures, and live for learning to cook new foods. I believe your brain is the most important muscle and must not atrophy! If we’re not getting smarter as we age, we are getting dumber.
I agree with your comment since I only read it to get some information on reading strangers behavior. I hope you enjoy the book and thanks for the info on “Reading People”.
Great stuff! Thank you Ms. SH!
Ok, but did he know that Shana had told everyone about Russell and painted him as an abusive person before anyone else had any contact with him.? That is why they have all said they were uncomfortable around him.
That is exactly what I was thinking as I read that.
Good point! Shaft set up Russell as a bad guy from the very beginning I bet..She was always mooning around about her crappy marriage and how it was all Russell’s fault.
Thank you SH. What Joe does not take in to account I think is that all cast & crew “knew” from beginning that Russel was “abusing her” – so he never had a chance of them liking him. Besides I remember Ken saying something nice about Russel, can’t remember when…
I cant remeber who it was John Turtorro or Paul or one of the wives (my CRS is flaring up lately) that they didnt know much about Russell because he was so busy working that all they knew of him was what Tayliar told them. There are reports out there that say that first day of filming Tayliar told everyone from Cast to crew she was being abused at home
Also If Taylor is indeed a sociopath wouldnt her body Language be suspect Sciopaths can beat Lie detectors can they fool body language experts as well
Good point! He’d need to have more facts (like the timeline?) to get a more accurate reading on her. Is that what he meant by “issues”?
Not just that, but all that Botox is sure to help her disguise facial reactions that otherwise happen naturally.
True. That’s not even a joke!
My uncle who is an intelligence officer for another country says you can beat a polygraph by clenching your butthole when you tell the truth (spiking the baseline level) and they wont be able to tell truths from lies.
Poisonous wretch! You are exactly right, lisa, about only learning something about Russell through the Widow. She is the personification of evil. This may be the first time in my life I’ve actually written those words, but I really believe she is gangrenous to the core.
That video above exposing the lies is ‘effin great!
that is completely true about sociopaths because they start to tell lies and repeat and repeat and repeat until they are truth in their own minds…they literally believe the lie they create.
Very true about body language with the men because of course you would be standoffish if you had heard that prior to meeting someone.
Experts are great at some things, but when they are cooking cutting a diagnosis and don’t have all the facts, you have to take it with a grain of salt. Only if he used her as a case study and knew all the facts would he actually be able to provide professional analysis.
nancy: Are you serious?? No one said he was giving “professional anaylsis”… Seriously. Damn.. SH
See why I love me some S.H. Thanks for that lol. Better you say it than us. ((Hugs))
A lot of the time when I start reading Shaft’s lies, I get “Frère Jacques” (Fara Jaka) stuck in my head. I never thought about why or ever put any stock in it, but for some reason this time, the lyrics from my childhood came instead of the traditional lyrics. I had forgotten them until just now??? Weird lol. The church I was brought up in (and would never go back to) believes people go to h3ll for pretty much everything, so please do not put any stock in the lyrics–they are not my personal beliefs. I just thought they were funny and kind of applicable
[Sung to the tune of "Frère Jacques" (Fara Jaka)]
Revelation, Revelation,
21:8, 21:8,
Liars go to h3ll, liars go to h3ll,
Burn burn burn, Burn burn burn
theme song from Two and a half men goes through my head, when I think someone is a troll on the site…..it is the song from two and one half men that they are singing around the micro phone and instead of men, men, men, I hear troll troll troll.
OMG, Lol!! I love that! That will probably start going through my head too now
Thanks for that!
Russell was like every money man I have ever know and never displayed ANY abusive behavior in season one at all. Money men are driven to make money ALL OF THE TIME and Traylor did not like it at all. They are ALL WORK AND PLAY but hard. May be that is what makes him odd in LaLa Land, but that is so normal in the rest of the other money capitals in this country. I think traylor set Russ up from the very beginning and spun a tale that the production team and bravo really wanted to tell to be “relevant” for reality tv. Case in point, In the dinner scene with Kyle, traylor, Russ and Murice in season two you can tell that it was the producer that was feeding Russell the information about who maybe the leak was that was reported about them getting a divorce because Liza was friends with the editor of the magazine. That is when Russell said that his litigators could just bring a suit to find out who leaked the story. All he wanted to know was were the leaks were coming from. Poor Russ.
I think taylor planned to use her marriage as a focus point for a storyline, by acting like she is so incredibly unhappy with her (seemingly perfect beverly hills live) seriously whats up with her always saying that.? But this whole suicide just fell into her lap, pre suicide kyle, lisa and camille were the stars and taylor was all the way at the back now after russels death shes been on dr phil , et, e news and even fox news she honestly must be in aww of it all , i can totally picture her calling her mommy and be like “omg did you see me on et last night, its happening gor me!” Seriously her writing a book not even 5 months after russels death is terrible! Her “grief” lasted 3 weeks!omg
I think when he made his comments about Russell, he was not privvy to all the background information on the situation. I think if he had more of the evidence, he would feel differently about his comments about Russell.
Also, I think he seemed like he was believing Taylor was abused at a certain point in his comments, but that she is full of drama as well.
I would like to hear his thoughts if he had a total picture of everything, knew all the evidence we have, etc.
Then it would be a great total picture.
That is all I was saying
nancy: It was not meant as an “in-depth look”.. it’s twitter. His thoughts??? He gave his thoughts… and then he said he’s done with the Housewives crap! WTH! SH
WOW Taylor freaked him out that badly Was it on ET that a Body Language expert “read” her body language from the DR Phil interview and Proclaimed she was felling the truth or being truthful;.
I agree Nancy
“She has many of the hallmarks — oversexualization, need to be noticed, theatrical, concerned for appearance, drama, etc.” Um, this quote to me describes everyone on Reality TV!
Taylor been very quiet on twitter , wonder why.
oh I know absolutely. I agree…Because he does what he does for a living it would be fun to have his total analysis, but we won’t ever get that of course. I just hope that no one takes a tiny snippet and runs with that. There are a lot of people in all walks of life from politicians to celebrities..they take a tiny snippet and that becomes the whole truth. I don’t want anyone reading..aka dana, taylor etc to say…………….see …he was distant…….don’t believe his friend. NOt that the doctor or anyone said or did anythign less than appropriate. I just don’t want some snooper using that tiny snippet (that one comment) to make a story out of it.
meaning russell was distant and unapproachable…don’t believe his friend necessarily.
sorry, ms SH I think I got myself into hot water with you, and it was completely unintended.
You know from my previous comments what a fan I am of all the work you do to provide us with additional information and commentary. My ex was a terrible person..and all his friends knew he was that way, and the last person to help you out if you needed help – so I was feeling a tad defensive for Russell’s friend’s assessment.
nancy: No problem! No hot water.. no big deal!!! TFC!! SH
I think you’ve got a point but that’s the frustration of twitter because I think you can never fully pick someone’s brain (because they could make good money out of it!) Although he didn’t seem to really want to talk about it, he managed to give a glimpse of what he sees as histrionic behavior that readers here already spotted. Its very interesting what a renowned expert would say off the top of his head after only viewing the Wendy Williams show video from last January (and we’re not sure of anything else)
Perhaps with enough interest he may write a small book on the subject to pique interest in his books or seminars. I know many seminars on Statement Analysis and Body Language include evaluating public figures to do the same thing (i.e., Susan Smith, OJ Simpson, The Ramsays, etc.) I would love if someone would put that bug in his ear—its not impossible!
We’ve had this book …Never be lied to again by David Lieberman PHD laying around here for about a year. This is as good a time to crack it open. It was a best seller if that means anything. I’ll pass on what I learn.
um… Im thinking this dude is just saying what the networks that hire him want him to say. He is about as much of an expert as Dr. Sockless.
Well call me a sucker, then. I bought his book. I’ll let you know what I think of him after I finish.. If you’re interested.
I bought it too-it was on ITunes! We’ll find out together.
It was my understanding he wasn’t hired by anyone but was accosted on Twitter while minding his own business.
Mine too. Let me know what you think, shadow?
I am just an interested party. Body language seems interesting to me!
Please do let us know what you think.
I’m right there with you Made. He’s a whore until proven otherwise.
at least it was a fun twitter exchange..I think that is what MS SH is great at doing.
I can refresh my page and there is always an interesting tidbit…then I read too much into this mere twitter exchange adn started to get a little defensive. Ms. SH reminded me it was just that…twitter exchange and he was just providing a little quick commentary based on the very limited information he has………but at least it was a new little somethn somethn for us to be entertained with.
Dang it, I just caught like literally the last three minutes into next weeks episode and it looks like it is going to be a wild ride. Lisa greets Bernie at the door, kisses his cheek and says I know him from somewhere, where do I know him from. Then goes, Is that Adrienne’s chef and told the girl next to her to please go and find out, how embarrassing. Then Brandi arrives and lo an behold, one of the women working at SUR had an affair with Brandi’s husband while they were married. Brandi tells her friend, I never met her in person but remember her crying on tv about how Lee Ann stole him from her. Then the waitress goes up to Lisa and says, ( I kid you not) ” We have a problem, a personal problem, I used to date her husband, and points to Brandi. End Clip.
We have a problem, I used to date her husband( while they were married), can not wait til next week to hear Lisa’s reply to that. Does she think Lisa is going to ask Brandi to leave because she had an affair with Brandi’s husband?? I can see Lisa saying, how is that my problem dahling, you’re the one that slept with a married man, maybe you better leave, I have no idea what Lisa is going to say, just thought it was too funny for the waitress to even go to her boss about it !
Maybe she’d say: “It’s your bed dahling, perhaps you better lie in it. Or rather, it was HER bed.”
Well we know now that MOA was FOS when he stated Paul was the husband dating the waitress….if we didn’t know that already
Actually Brandi arrived first, my bad. Wonder if Bernie invited Cedric? lol. Twas a funny exchange between Lisa and Bernie as he was entering SUR. She was greeting him and you know how they do the kiss thing, she greeted him and he was like, oh, i can kiss you and she said ,of course you can dahling, After he went in she started with the who was that, i know him from somewhere……. funny.
I saw that episode on itunes. Lisa kicks the waitress out of her party. The waitress has been working for Lisa for 2 years.
If anyone wants a good laugh go to amazon and look up Traylor’s book..scroll down to:

Wow! Has he got Taylor pegged on the HISTRIONIC. According to wikipedia:
Histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is defined by the American Psychiatric Association as a personality disorder characterized by a pattern of:
excessive emotionality and ATTENTION-SEEKING (reserved for such situations where excessive and “inappropriate attention seeking” is seen), including an
excessive need for approval and
inappropriately SEDUCTIVE behavior (to lead someone astray into a behavioral choice they would not have made if they were not in a state of sexual arousal.),
usually beginning in early adulthood. These individuals are lively, dramatic, vivacious, enthusiastic, and flirtatious.
They may be:
inappropriately sexually provocative,
express strong emotions with an impressionistic style, and
be easily influenced by others.
Associated features may include:
EGOCENTRISM (regarding oneself and one’s own opinions or interests as most important or valid),
self-indulgence,
continuous longing for appreciation, and
persistent MANIPULATIVE (a type of social influence that aims to change the perception or behavior of others through underhanded, deceptive, or even abusive tactics) behavior to achieve their own needs.
Wow Ms SH, great “get”! Joe Navarro himself!!! This guy is the utmost authority on body language!!!
And he’s confirmed most of what we already knew:
She’s a gold digger. Simbiotically dependent on Russell (or any future guy) for extravagant lifestyle. I guess gold diggers have to put up with a lot to maintain their objective.
When being interviewed she puts on a performance and that darn eye-closing thing she does – It’s “eye blocking” meaning she doesn’t want to talk about whatever is being addressed.
Histrionic features: need to be noticed, drama, oversexualization, theatrical, concern for appearance. We can add to that (based on the wikipedia definition above): attention-seeking; egocentric and persistent manipulative behavior.
So my question is, how much of this will we see in the upcoming Reunion?
The above comments are my opinion.
Great description, Observer! Yep, sounds like her! You and I discussed body language before so this was a very interesting exchange. Would have loved to see you chime into it too.. unless you did… in which case thank you!?
I wish we could be on here at the same time. I haven’t been able to be on here regularly this week, but hopefully we can catch up at some point. (I hope you’ll see this)
