The Real Housewives franchise is no longer a show, it’s a phenomena. And no matter how much we try to deny it–they have absolutely taken over lives. CNN’s Anderson Cooper isn’t ashamed to admit ATL’s Nene Leakes is “his boo,” many of the ladies are writing books and yep, we’re reading them (a la NYC’s Bethenny Frankel & NJ’s Teresa Giudice) And who do we have to thank for all of this? Mr. Andy Cohen – the Executive Vice President, Original Programming and Development at Bravo who also hosts the network’s reunion shows.

| The man in the middle of the drama, Andy Cohen. |
| And he, much like the wives, is a rag to riches story. Okay, maybe not rags, but not very many television executives go from the boardroom to the small screen. If you watch anything on Bravo, you know who he is. And if your DVR has ever run long, you might have caught him hosting the reunion shows of Housewives or his very own program Watch What Happens Live. So yeah, he is kinda of a BBFD (big Bravo freaking deal.) So when we ran into him at the Eden Roc Miami Beach (he and Elsa were poolside sippin’ on their mojitos…) and he agreed to answer a few questions, we shot him everything we have ever wanted to know. (If this is everything they have ever wanted to know about Andy, they don’t know Andy!)
Do your homework before talkin’ with Andy, m’kay! |
New Times: It’s freezing in New York City right now. Are you loving Miami? Andy Cohen: I love Miami. The people, the weather, the heat, the food, the spiciness. You know what, it’s very Cosmo and very European and I love that about it.
Tell us, what do you do when you’re here?
I lay by whatever pool will have me. I love to run. I had the best run this afternoon on the beach. I love going out… late. It’s just fun.
Why do a Real Housewives of Miami?
It’s a gorgeous place. It kind of has an OC Housewives feel.
Will Real Housewives of Miami be anything like Miami Social?
It’s completely different.
We die for Real Housewives of New Jersey. Which one is your favorite?
I am really obsessed with it all. Whatever season is on is my favorite.
You still are a top executive at Bravo and have your own show on a few nights a week. How do you do it all?
I don’t sleep very much.
What about the rumor you’re taking over for Regis Philbin?
I have a big day job and a late night show. I can say I’m going to sub for him in a couple of weeks later this year.
Speaking of your late night show, how did that all come to be?
It started as a web show. Then my executive producer said, “I have this studio and we could do it inexpensively on Bravo, lets try it. And it worked, I guess.

blah is right, but they didnt really ask any interesting ? either.
celesta: Well, that’s why the whole thing was ‘blah.’ However… Andy is the puppet master as it concerns anything to do with the Housewives and he could have added a little something… SH
Does he rate anything more than a puff piece?
I’m surprised they didn’t give him another chance to apologize for saying he wanted to stick a knife in his eyes when those NYC public school kids sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” at the end of the Oscars. He said they same thing about Heidi Montag when it was rumored she’s become a Real Housewife, then apologized a few days later. Seems to be a pattern for him – let out his true feelings and when he gets flack for being an asshole, he apologizes.
Hey wait, isn’t that lesson #1 in the “Bravolebrities Guide to Famewhoring”?
AOM: Isn’t that called ‘passive-aggressive’ in psych-speak? I would have more respect for him if he would not apologize for what he said. I agreed with him about both of his remarks (Heidi/choir); he meant what he said when he said it, so why go the apology route days later? His apology is not genuine, so he must have gotten some stern words from above to prompt his apologies… SH
I think he got a lot of criticism from viewers – people commenting/tweeting that they were disappointed, shocked, etc. and threatening to quit watching his shows. I think that’s what prompted his fake apology.
You’re right that he’s passive-aggressive. He also likes to dish the insults but can’t take it. For example, when Jerry Seinfeld mocked WWHL as a guest on the show, Andy got really pissy. Not so good natured when he’s the brunt of the jokes.
AOM: That particular WWHL was one of the best. Seinfeld just wouldn’t let up and Andy had to remain calm, but you could see the irritation creeping up and getting worse as the minutes went by… SH
What a dull interview. I bet Miss Andy was wearing Speedos. Oh Yea. He likes to run on the beach. And party like the Jersey Shore in Miami. “Cabs are here”. Please!
To MS.SH, You can apologize all you want, but once it’s said, you can never take those words back.
